Incorporated in 1972, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) is a leading producer of coking coal, non-coking coal, and washed coal in India. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited, the company operates 34 mines as of September 30, 2025, including underground, opencast, and mixed mines. BCCL primarily caters to the steel and power industries, with estimated coking coal reserves of around 7,910 million tonnes as of April 1, 2024, and accounted for 58.5% of India’s domestic coking coal production in Fiscal 2025.
The company’s operations span Jharia, Jharkhand, and Raniganj, West Bengal, across a total leasehold area of 288.31 square kilometres. BCCL undertakes opencast and underground mining, coal washing, monetisation of idle washeries through the Washery Developer and Operator (WDO) model, reopening of underground mines through the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) model, and solar power projects via self-consumption and grid injection. Coal production increased from 30.51 million tonnes in Fiscal 2022 to 40.50 million tonnes in Fiscal 2025.
Competitive strengths include being the largest coking coal producer in India with access to significant reserves, strategically located mines and washeries, strong backing from Coal India Limited, and a proven track record of growth and financial performance. BCCL is well-positioned to capitalise on the growing domestic demand for coking coal.
